WAIHI HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Since last September our meetings have been well-attended. Our membership is:- 76 Family subscriptions, 4 Life memberships, and 175 ordinary subscriptions, total 255.
September. Mr. Joe Anderson of Waihi Beach gave a most interesting talk on Waihi Beach.
September 20th, Old Folks' Afternoon brought a large crowd and everyone spent a happy and cheerful get together.
October. Mr. P. Speak showed slides of a trip to Mayor Island, Kaimai Tunnel and the South Island. These were greatly enjoyed by members.
November. Mrs. M. Young described historical places she visited while overseas. This proved most instructive.
November 8th. Two bus loads attended the re-enactment of Cook's landing at Whitianga, a really delightful outing.
FebruaryThrough the great generosity of Mr and Mrs T. Gordon in opening their wonderful gardens on four Tuesdays to raise funds for Hospital Comforts and Museum Extension, members were privileged to be helpers at the gardens. The project was a great success from a financial aspect, and all workers enjoyed themselves.
February. Members brought along historical articles which were viewed and discussed.
March. Mr. J. Killey spoke very well on Waikino battery.
March 21st. Field day to Maketu. 40 members enjoyed good weather on a most happy full of early history. Mr. and Mrs. Holloway of Estrellita Caravan Park, welcomed us and we had morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea at their delightful spot. Their private museum created much interest. Mrs. Holloway and Mrs. Tapsell accompanied the bus to churches, Maori meeting houses the Beach and all points of interest. The wealth of information imparted by these two ladies so efficiently delighted all. On the way home the rice processing plant at Te Puke was visited. Our visit to Maketu was tops.

Membership - 19 Family, 5 Life, and 215 ordinary members. Total 239.

September - Mr. I.W. Parlane - "Notable Visitors to Paeroa".
October - Mr. Hal. Thorp - Land Development.
November - Bus trip to Whitianga - Capt. Cook Bi-centennial.
February - Boat trip - Tauranga to Mayor Island.
March - Entertainment of New Plymouth Historical Society Members who were billeted in our homes. Saturday 7th After p.m. tea visited Mr. A.F. Thorp's Home. Evening - Messrs A. Beck and P. Jones showed slides of district including wonderful enlargements (in colour) of minerals.
Sunday 8th A.M. Visit to Mr.Murdock's Museum of Maori Artifacts at Hikutaia.P.M. Gordon's Lily Gardens, Waihi Beach. Waihi College (where Mr. Don Adams showed film of early Waihi with ex. commentary. Evening - Film of Old Paeroa. Discussion and Supper.
